Deeply disturbing... I received the following letter from Ambassador RONALD S. LAUDER, of the World Jewish Congress (WJC) and pass it along in part: "Every day, it seems, we hear another report of an anti-Semitic attack, a Jewish cemetery desecrated, a Holocaust memorial vandalized, or anti-Jewish hate speech posted online. Neo-Nazis and white nationalists are proudly marching in the streets of major cities across the United States and Europe, unafraid to express their hateful beliefs in public,...
Museum of Jewish heritage... The Museum of Jewish Heritage is a living memorial to the Holocaust. I recently received a letter from them and pass it along in part: "Who will share the truth about the Holocaust when the survivors are gone? This is a question that grows more urgent with every passing day... as fewer and fewer survivors remain to bear witness to the darkest chapter in human history. At a time when anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial are on the rise worldwide, including acts of hatre...
I love dogs... But you knew that already. I recently found this little poem I wrote on the subject and dedicated it in memory of Aldo: "Dogs are people too" I love dogs, yes I do! Life's not full without one, I love dogs, how about you? They bring laughter and fun! Cats are smart and cats are swell, And they never drool, But a dog is "man's best friend" That's the golden rule! (That's not to mention the unconditional love they give us. I've had dogs all of my life... cats and birds too, but I...
Whoever saves one life... I just watched the movie "Schindler's List" on television. I had seen it in the movies many years ago. I must admit, I was even more touched and disturbed than the first time. For those of you who don't know about Oskar Schindler, (although I can't imagine that any Jew wouldn't have that knowledge), Oskar Schindler (28 April 1908 - 9 Oct. 1974) was a German industrialist and a member of the Nazi Party, who is credited with saving the lives of 1,200 Jews during the...
Israel ahead in research... Once again, when it comes to science, medicine... everything, I am proud to say, Israel seems to be leading the pack. I read the following in Impact, the magazine of the American Associates of Ben Gurion University of the Negev. I pass it along to you: In the United States today, one in 68 children is diagnosed with autism, a disorder symptomized by social interaction problems, restricted interests and repetitive behaviors. Autism is currently the most prevalent...
Israel does it again... When it comes to science and technology, Israel is leading the field! I read this recently in the World Jewish Congress digest and pass it along: "As highlighted in NoCamels, (the leading news website covering the startup nation, with a focus on Israel innovation in technology, science, design, medicine and cyber) more than 23 million people worldwide suffer from diastolic heart failure, a condition in which the heart fails to pump sufficient oxygenated blood to meet the...
(I'm still upset about the Nazi march in Charlottesville some time ago. To think that our country's Commander in Chief said some of them were good people, makes me beyond angry!) And speaking of Nazis... I read this in the current issue of the World Jewish Congress (WJC) digest and pass it along to you. I know it is upsetting but we MUST be aware or another Holocaust could happen!: "A small neo-Nazi group that bills itself as 'the Hitlers you've been waiting for' surreptitiously put up...
Love thy neighbor?... I read this in the World Jewish Congress (WJC) digest and pass it along: "More than 200,000 Syrian civilians have benefited from Israeli aid sent over since last June, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) revealed. Dubbed 'Operation Good Neighbor,' the ongoing effort has seen the transfer of hundreds of tons of supplies to the residents of towns and villages just over the Syrian-Israeli border since the beginning of the civil war in 2013. According to the Jerusalem Post, the...
Salute to all who are willing to sacrifice for our country... I am writing this column in advance. It is Veteran's Day and I am the proud mother of a Lt. Commander Navy, former Army vet who served in Iraq, and former sailor who served on a minesweeper in the Persian Gulf. I am also the widow of a Korean War Army veteran. (I never served, but wow, how I worried!) Speaking of Veteran's... I received this letter from AARP Fraud Watch Network. It began, "They protected us. Now it's time to protect...
How sweet it is (or isn't)... Wow! What can't Israel do? They are leading the world in cures for many diseases, coming up with fabulous inventions that make our lives easier... and now... a new App that assesses fruit freshness! I read the following in the World Jewish Congress (WJC) digest and pass it along: "As published in the Times of Israel, an Israeli startup-Aclar Tech-has developed a mobile app that monitors, in real time, the ripeness, freshness and quality of fruits. The AclaroMeter...
I'm starting this column with some shout-outs... As many of you already know, I was in Florida Hospital-South, for 10 days due to my needing surgery for a heart valve. I am okay now (I hope) and I want to mention the following registered nurses who went "above and beyond" the call of duty to care for me. (I am very grateful.) For my pre-surgery I was on the sixth floor of the magnificent (like a hotel) Ginsburg Tower, built through donations from our own ALAN GINSBURG. There one of my nurses,...
Gloria Yousha could not write her Scene Around column this week because she recently had heart surgery. She wanted to let everyone know she is doing fine in her recovery, and thanks all her well wishers. Her column will return next week....
Remembering Jewish and American history... We all remember the World Trade Center and the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001, in New York City. (How could we ever forget?) DANIEL LEWIN, an American-Israeli entrepreneur and former Israeli commando, became the unofficial first casualty of the 9/11 terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people. Born in Denver, Colorado, he moved as a teenager to Jerusalem where he enlisted in Israel's elite special forces commando unit-the Sayeret Matkai. (One of the...
Jews and cancer... I received this information from the Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA) and pass it along to you in part: "This is about the three cancers Jews need to worry about most, and how to reduce the risks." (As if Jews don't have enough to worry about.) "Specifically, Jews are at elevated risk for three types of the disease: melanoma, breast cancer and ovarian cancer. The perils are particularly acute for Jewish women. The higher prevalence of these illnesses isn't spread evenly among a...
I am emotional... Before I even start this column, I must mention the Monday, Sept. 25th, showing of the tape, Broadway from 1893 to 1927, a JCC 39ers program presented by SHELDON BROOK. Although I am living in Central Florida for more than 53 years, New York City will always be "home" to me, but, of course the last time I was there was with my dear departed spouse, Irv. Just seeing Times Square created much emotion. That was followed by the stories of legends Irving Berlin, Fanny Brice, Jerome...
A salute to the righteous... "They risked their lives to save Jews"... according to The Jewish Foundation for the Righteous, "Now they need our help." This is just one example of a righteous family: "Presov, Slovakia, Fall 1941, Elena Maradikova lived with her brother and parents in Presov. Elana's father, Ondrej, worked as a detective for the Presov police. Prior to the outbreak of WWII, two young Jewish men, Martin Weil and Jan Kohl, had rented a room from the Maradik family. When the war...
I received this letter... "As the Jewish year 5777 comes to an end, we must dig deep to find optimism for world Jewry in the coming year," is how it began. It was from RONALD S. LAUDER, President, World Jewish Congress. I think it is important and thought provoking enough to pass it along to you (in part): "Thanks to you (meaning all of us), despite having another difficult and tumultuous year, the Jewish people moved forward with unity, strength and great resolve. As troubling as this past year...
Before I even start this column, I want to say that I am writing it well in advance of Hurricane Irma and I hope all of you (and your pets) came through safe and sound. A saying that caught my eye... It rings true to me. It's attributed to a lady named HILARY COOPER: "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away." Lebanon bans movie... I read this in a recent issue of the World Jewish Congress (WJC) Digest: "Following pressure by...
I am so proud... I really am very proud of all the strides in medicine made by scientists at Ben-Gurion University (BGU) of the Negev Center of Medical Innovation. That's why I write about it so often. I know that (heaven forbid) if a loved one or I was diagnosed with an illness, I would probably turn to them or have them consulted in some way. I received this information recently and pass it along to you: There is an urgent need for new therapies to target challenging, difficult-to-treat cancer...
Something to think about... I read this on Facebook. It was posted by our own ALAN ROCK: This was a line from the mouth of Thomas Jefferson: "When the speech condemns a free press, you are hearing the words of a tyrant." (Nuff said!) From Ben-Gurion University of the Negev... "Sometimes it's easy to forget what a miracle today's Israel is. Everywhere you look, you see a modern, vibrant, thriving nation with more promise than imagination could have conceived a few decades ago. And Israel's...
Oh No!... My favorite comedian of all, maybe the funniest comic of all time, has passed on. I'm talking about Jerry Lewis. Jerry Lewis was an American actor, comedian, singer, film producer, film director, screenwriter, and humanitarian. He was known for his slapstick humor in film, television, stage and radio. He died at the age of 91 on Aug. 20th. He will be remembered for all of his movies, his years as half of the team of Martin and Lewis (with Dean Martin) and mostly, for the joy he...
'Confronting Anti-Semitism in America"... The following (in part) is from The Huffington Post some months ago. It is very enlightening: "No one is born hating, but, tragically, some are taught to hate, whether in the name of racial purity, religious doctrine, political dogma, ethnic stereotyping, sheer jealousy... you name it. To state the obvious, Jews have never been immune from these age-old cancers. Nor is it the case today. Recently there have been bomb threats against Jewish community cent...
Memories and pure joy... What a week of television! I laughed. I cried. I clapped. I even changed one of the MUST destinations on my bucket list from a visit to my mom's birthplace, Montreal, Canada, to Broadway, New York City, my birthplace. (Of course, I hope to live long enough to visit both places.) The first exciting TV show for me was memories of Bob Hope. Little bits from many of his shows, including those entertaining our troops in World War II, Korea, Viet Nam... and on and on. (How I...
Do you remember?... The following (in part) was sent to my editor from LAURENCE MORRELL and was passed on to me. (The original author is unknown). Growing up Jewish... If you are Jewish, and grew up in a city with a large Jewish population, the following will invoke heartfelt memories. (I grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. with a super large Jewish population!) The Yiddish word for today is PULKES (PUHL-kees). Translation: THIGHS. Please note: this word has been traced back to the language of one of the...
In Memoriam... Ruth Gruber, a photojournalist and author who documented Stalin's gulags, life in Nazi Germany and the plight of Jewish refugees intercepted by the British on the infamous passage of the Exodus to Palestine in 1947, died a few months ago at her home in Manhattan. She was 105. Her son, DAVID MICHAELS, confirmed her death. Ms. Gruber called herself a witness, and in an era of barbarities and war that left countless Jews displaced and stateless, she often crossed the line from...
