My Canadian roots... My mom was born in Montreal, Canada, and I'm sure I have some relatives still living there. I've been to western Canada, performing at the Calgary Stampede with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra and I've done sight-seeing in surrounding areas, but I've never been to Montreal. It's on my "Bucket List." On the subject of Canada... I read this in the World Jewish Congress (WJC) digest and pass it along to you: Speaking to a forum of the WJC, Canada's Foreign Minister, Chrystia...
He was loved and respected... I wrote briefly about the late Senator John McCain in last week's column when I first heard about his passing. (I write well in advance of publication). What I want to add is that he was a true hero and I want him to be remembered in history as Winston Churchill, Presidents Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson, etc., are remembered. I want my grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, etc., to learn about him. Though a life-long...
Great music. Great memories... Unlike the music of today, (much of it Rap spelled with a silent C)... thanks to my dear friend, TONI McDONNELL, I was able to watch a television show on the UCF Channel featuring the big bands and the music I appreciate. And I appreciated Toni telling me about it! I especially enjoyed seeing the legendary Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra that I eventually became the vocalist with. I repeat... Great Music. Great Memories! Honors well deserved... I received this news from...
More reasons for depression... It is acknowledged by most that as a person grows older... really elderly... they may experience bouts of depression. It happens to me occasionally, even though I'm NOT elderly, (Shut up!) especially when I read things like the following story from The World Jewish Congress Digest (WJC): "One of the oldest functioning Jewish schools, The Carolineskolen in Copenhagen, Denmark, recently suffered smashed windows and anti-Semitic graffiti. The vandals, who perpetrated...
I love... I love a lot of things... my spouse of course; our three sons; our grandchildren; all family; dear friends; the United States... and Brig. General Dr. DANNY GOLD. (Oy vay! Relax Irving, and read on before you get crazy!) Actually, I love Dr. Gold because his "brainchild" is Israel's Iron Dome. The following article comes directly from the World Jewish Congress Digest (WJC). I pass it along to you with asides in parenthesis by me: "It's more than just the logo on Israeli apparel or the...
Of all places, Germany?... With the remembrance of the Holocaust, the thought of anti-Semitism is never far from my thoughts. I know about its revival in many parts of Europe... but in Germany? I read this in the latest edition of the World Jewry Digest (WJC). I know the thought of anti-Semitism is upsetting but its better to know and be aware. Read on: "WJC President Ambassador RONALD S. LAUDER was joined by German Chancellor ANGELA MERKEL, President JOACHIM GAUCK and other German leaders at a...
Shades of ISIS... How hard it is to comprehend... fighting an enemy that prefers death to life. What can you do to threaten them? They feel that death means getting together with 72 virgins, etc. (Well, we could threaten that for every terrorist that hits the dust, we kill his mother-in-law as well. Or we make the terrorists believe there are not 72 virgins, rather one 72-year-old virgin... or we can tell them that upon death, they will be united with 72 nuns holding rifles. This is all sick...
A Shayne Maydel?... That expression fits me today like a loch in kop! But, believe it or not, I was once a great beauty. (Shut up!) My figure was superb; my breasts used to stand out proudly, but now gravity has taken them down. (I trip on them often); and all the muscles in my legs have turned to flab, acting like brakes when they rub together. (I can hardly walk!) My face, that could once stop traffic (in NYC), now stops traffic everywhere! I recently told my spouse I was stunning. He said,...
Shades of Mel Gibson… The following information comes directly from the Simon Wiesenthal Center with asides by me: “Vicious attacks on the memory of the Holocaust…from denial to distortion…to revisionism…are erupting in countries worldwide. Every day in ways big and small, the deniers and anti-Semites are chipping away at our history, savaging the memory of the six million who perished. Some examples are: The senior Egyptian official in charge of appointing editors of all state-run Egyptian...
Wow! Talk about your good ideas… Have any of you seen the latest Febreze commercials? (You know… the ones where people are blind-folded and asked to sit in a room or in a car.) They don’t know that there is either garbage, dirty underwear, or some other fowl-smelling items placed near them. And the reason they don’t know, you ask? The air-effects-product Febreze is placed near them to disguise the odors. Comments the blind-folded people make sound something like this: “It smells like a garden....
See something? Say something… This saying really doesn’t apply here… but if the following email (or photo) I recently received, rings a bell in any way… do say something to someone, please. Especially, contact HANAN SHOMRONY via the email address below: “My name is Hanan Shomrony and I’m searching for my brother. He was born in 1946 , his parents’ first born, in Europe after the Second World War. In 1949, when he was 2 ½ years old, he and his parents made aliya to Zfat in Israel. He was hospita...
“Tele-Vangelizing” in Israel?... What else could you call it? The name “tele-vangelizing” seems perfect! This comes from The World Jewish Congress Foundation Digest with my asides: “There’s something stirring in the air over Jerusalem and Israelis are feeling the static. It’s one thing for evangelical Christians to show their fervid support for Israel. It is quite another thing for them to tell Jews to convert in time for the Second Coming.” (Really? Sure, I pretended to convert when I was 5 ye...
So what else is new?... According to an international agency that studied Israel’s delivery of health care, the agency finds Israel has a quality system overall (again I repeat, what else is new?) but with some improvements needed. The World Jewish Congress Foundation reports (with asides by me) that “the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), of which Israel is a member, dispatched an international team to the Jewish state more than a year ago to investigate hos...
Farewell, my friend… Just a little tribute to a wonderful man I was fortunate to meet when he visited our Orlando Jewish community some years ago. I refer to former New York City Mayor Ed Koch, who died recently. Mayor Koch was a man I always admired, especially my being a native New Yorker (Brooklyn), and realizing all the good he had done. For one, I can remember Times Square in Manhattan being a really seedy place with X-rated movies and show bars where “low-life” criminal types hung out....
