Most pregnant mothers are advised to pack a suitcase for their upcoming visit to the hospital. Everyone, but especially seniors, should keep a packed bag at home. It should contain the obvious things like nightclothes, toiletries, an outfit to go home in, slip on sneakers and a book to read. The bag should also include a copy of your medical records and your legal documents. The physicians at intake do not know your medical wishes/directives, so it is important to have them with you at the time of arrival. Packing in advance is a great gift to...
What do you get when you combine a healthy dose of appreciation, a gourmet luncheon with friends, and a one-of-a-kind holiday shopping bazaar? The answer is the Jewish Pavilion's "JP Connections," honoring its dedicated volunteers Gary Becker and Sandi Trainor. "Our annual luncheon on Dec. 2nd at 11 a.m. at the Hilton in Altamonte Springs is a yearly opportunity for us to show our appreciation and to connect with our wonderful volunteers and members who support the Jewish Pavilion in so many...
Jill Goldsmith is a home seamstress who learned to sew as a girl and continues to sew items that bring her joy and comfort. She has a small home-based business making one-of-a-kind handbags. When the virus first appeared Goldsmith looked at her fabric stash and realized she could make washable, home-sewn masks for friends and family. (These are not masks a frontline caregiver would use, and Goldsmith said the masks must be washed in hot water first. "I did wash all the fabric before any sewing...
With school and religious school going virtual, this is a wonderful time for children at home to be helping seniors. The Jewish Pavilion has been in touch with the Jewish schools and requested that the children make Passover cards, and "I am thinking of you cards" that the Jewish Pavilion will distribute to seniors. The children are also welcome to make Easter cards, which the Pavilion will help distribute to residents of other faiths. The Jewish Pavilion staff and volunteers are also emailing...
The Jewish Pavilion loves its seniors and only want the best for them. When another agency was unable to continue holiday meals for seniors, The Jewish Pavilion Board of Directors unanimously voted to take on this very important project. The meals will be prepared by Kosher Gourmet and delivered by board members. Beginning with Chanukah 2019, the Jewish Pavilion in conjunction with Kinneret Council on Aging will be providing Jewish holiday meals for our homebound Jewish elders. In the future, meals also will be available for Passover and Rosh...
Herb Maneloveg and his sister Phyllis Maneloveg Kasrel grew up in a small home in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, where their father had a store called People's Furniture. There were 20 Jews in the town and an Orthodox synagogue where they belonged. It was a very loving family. Their mother was a wonderful cook who prepared traditional Jewish foods. Holidays like Passover were celebrated with Orthodox grandparents where the seders were all in Hebrew and never ended. Kasrel's first memory was at age...
Dr. Lee Adler recently arranged a photo shoot at Cascade Heights for the Jewish Pavilion. Bernice Davids was one of the models. She had been a very active volunteer for the Jewish Pavilion for many years. A few years ago, she and her husband, Joe, received the Volunteers of the Year Award. Bernice was briefly interviewed about her life prior to the photographing, and this is what the Jewish Pavilion learned. Bernice Davids was born in Cleveland on June 3, 1930. She lived most of her life in Phil...
Cyndie Ellman lost her husband in July and attended grief counseling with a lovely woman who was unaware of her faith and "just didn't get it." She then tried a secular grief support group run by one of the hospices, and again "they just didn't get it." Her third try was a charm. Ellman is currently participating in a Grief Support Group co-sponsored by the Jewish Pavilion and VITAS Hospice. The magic formula" was in the facilitator. "Rabbi Maurice Kaprow gets it... he provides support from a Jewish perspective and that made all the difference...
While the weather outside was cloudy and showers were sporadic, close to 50 golfers happily gathered for the second annual Pavilion Golf Society Tournament on Sunday, June 1, at Alaqua Country Club. Thanks to sponsorships from Fifth Third Bank, IOA, Sonny's BBQ, advertisers and hole sponsors, the Jewish Pavilion raised over $16,000 to support the Orlando Senior Help Desk. Proceeds allow seniors and family members to obtain the assistance and guidance they need when faced with a crisis. Senior...
Dual residency in London and Heathrow led to the formation of the Pavilion Golf Society here in Orlando. Lloyd Green, an active member of the Jewish community in London, shares a passion for the elderly with Ken Davis, another new member of the local Jewish community. Both men are active in the Congregation Ohev Shalom Men’s Club. Together, along with several members of the COS Brotherhood, they decided to plan a golf tournament with proceeds going to the Jewish Pavilion. The tournament will follow in the footsteps of a successful golf t...
