(JNS) — A unique structure unearthed in Jerusalem’s ancient City of David was used for ritual practices during the time of the First Temple, according to a report published Tuesday. The site was uncovered 15 years ago on the eastern slopes of the City of David compound, just outside the walled Old City of Jerusalem. It includes eight rock-hewn rooms containing an altar, a standing stone, an oil press and a winepress, according to the Israel Antiquities Authority. Excavation director Eli Shukron wrote in an article published in the sci...

  • Four ways to cherish the 'chosenness' of the Jews

    Shlomo Vile|Jan 24, 2025

(JNS) - The idea that the Jews are the "Chosen People" is not particularly fashionable, even among many Jews. It's viewed as sectarian, supremacist and even racist. Here are four ways that all of us, Jews and non-Jews, can embrace the idea. The Jews are chosen to choose life Near the end of the Torah in the 19th chapter of the book of Deuteronomy, Moses, in his final address, told us that we need to make a choice. Forty years beforehand, he led us out of slavery in Egypt, and we became a free...

  • Biden entered pledging to fight antisemitism - he leaves with historic levels

    Ron Kampeas|Jan 24, 2025

(JTA) — WASHINGTON – April 25, 2019, marked an extraordinary moment in American Jewish history: It was the first time a presidential candidate framed his decision to run around fighting antisemitism. The candidate was Joe Biden. At first, Biden hadn’t seemed eager to run for president in 2020. But that changed when Neo-Nazis marched through Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017, shouting slogans that Biden’s father taught him represented the worst of human nature. Worse, Trump could not bring himself to unequivocally condemn the marchers and the...

He was captured while serving near the Gaza border. If the first phase of the ceasefire deal goes through, he could become the only living U.S. citizen to remain i...

  • Hosting antisemites on college campuses endangers students

    Farid Shukurlu|Jan 24, 2025

(JNS) — U.N. Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, widely known for her antisemitic and anti-Israel views, recently visited the London School of Economics and Political Science. Her presence raised significant concerns in Jewish societies and the wider Jewish community as her previous so-called lectures have gathered dozens of radicalized youths who often wage a campus war on Jewish and Zionist students. Albanese is a proud supporter of antisemitic mobs who proudly deny Israel’s right to exist, as well as an outspoken “critic” of the world’s...

    Canaan Lidor|Jan 24, 2025

(JNS) — Relatives of hostages being held by Hamas in Gaza on Monday urged right-wing politicians to leave the government if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agrees to a deal with the terror group that leaves some abducted Israelis in captivity. “Unless the deal includes all the hostages unconditionally, living and dead, in one go, we call on the Religious Zionist and Otzma Yehudit parties, along with the Likud Knesset lawmakers who have so far only supported a full deal, to immediately announce that they are pulling out of the gov...

  • AJC report asserts anti-Israel 'indoctrination' in Massachusetts schools

    Jan 24, 2025

(JNS) — A report from the New England branch of the American Jewish Committee details efforts by the Massachusetts Teachers Association to slant classroom instruction against the Jewish state. The AJC says the report, released on Dec. 12, shows the teachers union “waged an aggressive campaign that has encouraged K-12 teachers to become pro-Palestinian activists and bring anti-Israel propaganda into their classrooms.” Examples of the MTA’s bias cited in the report include promoting “multiple one-sided anti-Israel resolutions,” including o...

  • Orthodox college football player Sam Salz is on a mission

    Jacob Gurvis|Jan 24, 2025

(JTA) - Before Nov. 16, Sam Salz had never played a snap of organized football. The 5-foot-6, 160-pound wide receiver grew up attending an Orthodox day school in Philadelphia that didn't have a football team. But last Saturday night, Salz took the field for the first time with the Texas A&M Aggies, the No. 15-ranked team in Division I and a decorated program that plays in the elite Southeastern Conference. Salz walked me through his first taste of football, and what it meant to hear his name...
