  • New immigrants' soccer team hopes to beat Israel

    Andrew Tobin|Mar 31, 2017

TEL AVIV (JTA)-"Vamos!" "Pass it!" "Ladrao!" For most of the match on a local field Friday, the Inter Aliyah Club soccer players speak a variety of languages. But when the ball hits the back of the opposing team's net, they join in soccer's universal victory cry: "Goooal!" Inter Aliyah, a team of Jewish immigrants to Israel mostly from Europe and South America, is playing its first season in the national soccer league. Bonded by their immigration experience and a love of soccer, the players...

  • Chef Michael Solomonov goes 'In Search of Israeli Cuisine' in new film

    Lucy Cohen Blatter|Mar 31, 2017

(JTA)-"I thought it was just going to be about falafel and hummus." That was the perception of Israeli cuisine that filmmaker Roger Sherman had when he reluctantly decided to accompany his friend, the acclaimed Jewish cookbook writer Joan Nathan, on a food tour of Israel in 2010. But the reality exceeded his expectations. "I was blown away by what I consider to be the hottest food scene in the world," Sherman told JTA in a recent interview. "I thought, this is the perfect subject for a film."...

  • Six decades after synagogue bombing, Atlanta Jews feel threats again

    Ben Sales|Mar 31, 2017

ATLANTA (JTA)-When Janice Rothschild Blumberg first heard that a bomb threat had hit an Atlanta Jewish center, she had only one thought: "It's happening all over again." Blumberg, 93, remembers her shock in 1958 when white supremacists bombed her synagogue, then called the Hebrew Benevolent Congregation and commonly known as The Temple. The perpetrators, who were never convicted, were believed to be retaliating against the outspoken civil rights advocacy of the synagogue's rabbi, and her husband...

Israel Police arrest 22 haredi Orthodox men accused of sex crimes JERUSALEM (JTA)—Police arrested 22 haredi Orthodox men in four Israeli cities who are suspected of sex crimes against women and minors over the past two years but were sheltered by religious leaders. The men, aged 20-60, were arrested Monday morning in Jerusalem, Beit Shemesh, Betar Illit and Bnei Brak, all cities with large haredi populations. Residents of the communities tried to prevent the arrests, throwing rocks and other projectiles, damaging some police cars. The police p...

  • Easy maamoul: a Middle Eastern Jewish dessert

    Shlomo Schwartz|Mar 31, 2017

(The Nosher via JTA)-Maamoul is a traditional small pastry from the Levant (the historical area between Syria in the north and Egypt in the south including Lebanon, Israel and Palestine). Muslims, Christians and Jews lived in the area alongside each other for over 1,500 years and shared many cultural and culinary traditions, including this date and walnut-stuffed cookie. For many, this Middle Eastern treat is a sweet bite of nostalgia, as the cookies are associated with certain holidays and...

  • Business Update: You can have your cake and drink it too

    Christine DeSouza|Mar 31, 2017

The Bakery Bar in downtown Orlando is a must if you enjoy desserts and cocktails. The difference with this bar is that the dessert is the cocktail. From the Crème Brulee Cake Martini (my favorite) to the Apple Pie Old Fashioned (this drink has that wonderful cinnamon flavor and an apple slice garnishes the glass rather than a cherry), it is the perfect place to go to after dinner at a local restaurant or to satisfy a sweet tooth after a show at the Dr. Phillips Center or the Amway-both within...
