BALTIMORE (JTA) – As a former WNBA president who played in what is considered the first U.S. professional basketball league for women, Donna Orender has been eager for a trailblazing female to join the National Basketball Association in a prominent role. So she was plenty pleased last week when the world champion San Antonio Spurs hired Becky Hammon, a point guard with the WNBA's Stars of the Texas city, as a paid assistant coach – a first in NBA history. "Becky's a special woman, a great pla...

  • Finding the Goldbergs: A Catskills mystery unraveled

    Uriel Heilman, JTA|Aug 29, 2014

MONTICELLO, N.Y. (JTA)-The moment I kicked in the door of the abandoned house in the heart of the Catskills, I felt like I was in an episode of "The Twilight Zone: Borscht Belt edition." In some corners it appeared as if the residents were just out for the afternoon. Pictures and tchotchkes adorned the walls. A mezuzah with the parchment still inside was affixed to a doorpost. A working upright piano sat in one corner. Ironing boards were open. Mattresses lay on beds; in one room the beds were s...

  • NY Post slams Obama's Israel policy

    Aug 29, 2014

(Israel Hayom/Exclusive to JNS.org) A New York Post editorial published Sunday slammed the Obama administration for its recent Israel policy. Headed “Obama deserts an ally in wartime,” the editorial said, “What kind of ally refuses to send you desperately needed weapons when you’re smack in the middle of a war? Apparently, that’s what the Obama folks did with Israel, which is caught up fighting with Hamas. It’s unforgivable.” The editorial was referring to the Obama administration’s recent decision to hold a shipment of Hellfire missil...
