    Jonathan Feldstein|Sep 27, 2019

A miracle took place in Jerusalem last month. On the surface, that’s not so extraordinary. Perhaps more than anyplace else, Jerusalem is the capital of miracles, in both biblical and modern times. Last month, Jews worldwide observed what’s known as the saddest day on the calendar, Tisha B’Av, the ninth of the Hebrew month of Av. Tisha B’Av is the saddest day because on it, the same day on the Jewish calendar, both Temples were destroyed, first by the Babylonians and then by the Romans, hundreds of years apart. Zechariah prophesied that this wi...

  • This Apple Cake recipe is a perfect dessert for Rosh Hashanah if you're gluten-free

    Rachel Pattison|Sep 27, 2019

(JTA via The Nosher)-In recent years, it seems that more and more of my family members and friends have developed food allergies and food intolerances. This can make it difficult to determine what to serve at holidays and family events. So a gluten-free, dairy-free apple cake for Rosh Hashanah is a delicious way to celebrate the holiday while also suiting everyone at my table. Nut allergy? You can absolutely leave out the walnuts here. My preferred gluten-free flour to use is Bob's Red Mill...

(JNS)-World-renowned author, criminal lawyer, Harvard law professor and civil rights defender Alan Dershowitz sets the tone for his support of Israel in the introduction to his new memoir, succinctly explaining the global injustice-based on unrelenting anti-Semitism-meted out against the world's only Jewish state: "No country faced with comparable threats can boast a better record of human rights, a higher regard for the rule of law, or greater efforts to reduce civilian casualties. Nor has any...

‘Seinfeld’ will move to Netflix in 2021 By Ben Sales (JTA)—Starting in 2021, Netflix will officially be the master of the “Seinfeld” domain. The iconic “show about nothing,” whose episodes are currently available to stream on Hulu, will move to Netflix the year after next. It will stay on Netflix for five years. The move comes after Netflix lost the rights to two other mega-hits that aired on NBC, “The Office” and “Friends.” But Netflix negotiated with Sony, which owns “Seinfeld,” and—yada, yada, yada—the deal was struck. • The real story behind 'The Spy,' Sacha Baron Cohen's new Netflix series

    Josefin Dolsten|Sep 27, 2019

(JTA)-For "Borat," his 2006 film, Sacha Baron Cohen went undercover as a made-up Kazakh journalist who travels America and gets unwitting targets to share his boorish and sometimes bigoted opinions. In "Who Is America," the Jewish actor creates a variety of characters who manage to get prominent Americans to say shockingly offensive things. In "The Spy," he once again goes undercover, but in a very different way. The Jewish actor and filmmaker portrays the real-life Eli Cohen, a daring Israeli a...
