On Tuesday, Oct. 20, the students, teachers and families of the Jewish Academy of Orlando came together for "Family Innovation Night & Community Open House." This evening of fun and learning was an opportunity for the school to showcase its new "Innovation Lab." The Innovation Lab at the Jewish Academy of Orlando is a place for students to create and dream. The Innovation Lab is the Jewish Academy's "Maker Space," a 21st century "Shop Class" which provides the students a place to "do it yourself...
By Dini Druk Remember your own preschool days? Colored posters covering the walls, brightly painted classrooms and circle time with alphabet flashcards as part of the morning routine? If you plan on sending your preschooler to any of today's award winning preschools, you're highly unlikely to find any of that. The overall themes in today's progressive preschools are nature, open spaces, and child-directed learning experiences. Educational movements such as Montessori, Bank Street, Waldorf, and...
TORONTO (JTA)-The election of Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau as prime minister represents the first change in Canadian government since Stephen Harper and his Conservatives assumed power in 2006. What is unlikely to change, however, is Ottawa's robust support for Israel-a policy cemented under Harper, whose forceful backing of the Jewish state earned him a reputation as one of world's most pro-Israel political leaders. When it comes to core Jewish issues, Trudeau has said all the right...
TEL AVIV (JTA)-In assigning blame for the recent wave of violence in Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has turned to the usual suspects-Hamas and the Palestinian Authority. But he has also accused a lesser-known group that operates within Israel's borders: the Islamic Movement, a religious political group and social service organization. Netanyahu has seized on the inflammatory rhetoric of the movement's northern branch, which claims the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem is "in danger" and...
MANCHESTER CENTER, Vt. (JTA)-Bernie Sanders reads from the Passover Haggadah in Hebrew and jokes with his seder hosts about finding hametz, traces of leavening, after they have thoroughly cleaned the house in preparation for the holiday. The presidential candidate, a socialist competing for the Democratic nomination, also follows Israeli politics close enough to understand the influence of the haredi Orthodox parties in government. And like many Jews of his generation, Sanders, 74, chafes at...
‘Subway Guy’ Jared Fogle pays $1 million to victims (JTA)—Jared Fogle, the former Subway pitchman, has paid $1 million in restitution to his victims. Fogle, 38, who became known as “the Subway Guy,” pleaded guilty in August to charges of distributing and receiving pornography, and having sex with minors. Also as part of his plea deal, Fogle, who is Jewish, will serve five to 12 1/2 years in federal prison. Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven DeBrota announced on Oct. 22 in Indianapolis that Fogle had paid restitution of $100,000 each to 10 of his...
NEW YORK (JTA)-I first met Leon Klinghoffer's daughters in 2004, shortly after my father and stepmother were murdered in a robbery. Back then I was a TMI (too much information) machine, telling my story not only to friends but also to anyone in my line of vision. One Shabbat, after going to the Village Temple in New York to say Kaddish, I approached the rabbi, Chava Koster, and told her, too. Unlike the sales clerk at Staples or the dinnertime telemarketer I had forced off script, Koster...
