    Marcy Oster|Nov 22, 2019

JERUSALEM (JTA)—A rocket fired by Palestinian terrorists in Gaza struck an assisted-living facility in the southern Israel city of Ashkelon on Wednesday afternoon, injuring a woman in her 70s. The resident was injured in the face and arms by flying glass after the rocket crashed through her living unit. The Israeli military said 360 rockets had been fired at Israel from Gaza between Tuesday morning—since its targeted killing of Palestinian Islamic Jihad senior commander Baha Abu al-Ata—and about 5 p.m. Wednesday. Two Israelis have been injur...

    Gloria Yousha|Nov 22, 2019

YES! I agree... I read this in the World Jewish Congress digest and pass it along to you: "WJC President Ambassador RONALD S. LAUDER welcomed the U.S. House of Representatives' resolution condemning the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement as a positive and encouraging step in the fight against blind anti-Semitism. The resolution passed in a vote of 398 to 17. The fact that this resolution passed with such overwhelming bipartisan support is a sign of hope for the future of Israel-related...

  • How Ukraine's bloody 2014 revolution affected Jews

    Cnaan Liphshiz|Nov 22, 2019

(JTA)-Ukraine is in the news now for its ties to the Trump impeachment scandal, but this year also marks the fifth anniversary of a turbulent revolution that roiled the country and ousted its then-president. In 2014, anti-government demonstrations became violent, and clashes with police led to the deaths of dozens of protesters. Ukraine's parliament voted to oust President Viktor Yanyukovych, and voters elected Petro Poroshenko-who was replaced earlier this year by Zolodymyr Zelensky, the...

(JNS, Israel Hayom)—“The new rules of the game are clear—the IDF will operate freely, without any limitation,” Israeli Defense Minister Naftali Bennett said on Thursday, a short while after a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian Islamic Jihad went into effect, ending two days of intense rocket-fire from the Gaza Strip. Bennett, who took up his post as defense minister on Tuesday as rockets fell across central and southern Israel following the targeted killing of PIJ commander Baha Abu al-Ata, singled out residents of the country...

    Cnaan Liphshiz|Nov 22, 2019

ODESSA, Ukraine (JTA)—Alina Feoktistova always knew she was Jewish, but the first time she sought contact with the community was to see if it could pay her tuition. Feoktistova’s family couldn’t afford to send her to college, but the local Jewish community provides an alternative in the form of the Jewish University of Odessa, an accredited institution that offers tuition and room and board at no charge. Founded in 2003, the university features five-year programs in a number of fields, including foreign language, early childhood educa...

The list features what the publication says is an increasing number of influential people who aren’t establishment types—the world leaders, CEOs of big companies and blockbuster actors that make up its Time 100 list. The new list includes a diverse range of figures, from pop star Camila Cabello to the viral rapper Lil Nas X to presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg. Among them are a few...

Following a speech last week by Professor Harold Kasimow, who survived the Holocaust as a child, Benedictine senior Ayah Ali asked a question which drew a parallel between Kasimow’s experiences and Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians. Ali, according to her Twitter feed, is affiliated with the Chicago-area school’s chapter of Students for Justice in Palesti...

SAN FRANCISCO (J. The Jewish News of Northern California via JTA)—Why was a Nazi flag hanging on the wall inside a California parole office over the weekend? The state’s Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation has launched an investigation to find out. An anonymous video uploaded Saturday on Imgur, a video and photo sharing website similar to Instagram, shows a red Nazi flag with a black swastika in the center visible through the window of a CDCR office in downtown Sacramento. The video also shows what appears to be a second flag, black wi...

  • Yapchik (potato kugel with meat): The 'Hungarian cholent'

    Emmanuelle Lee|Nov 22, 2019

Yapchik is made up of two layers of golden, crispy potato cake-very similar to a kugel-that sandwich a layer of meat. As the fall days get colder, it will welcome you and your guests home like a hug, and warm you up from the inside out. Yapchik has been referred to as a "Hungarian cholent" because it is traditionally cooked in the oven overnight and, while my recipe is a faster version, I have included instructions below for how to do this. Developing this recipe made me feel closer to the...

  • Fish and chips' surprising Jewish history

    Ronnie Fein|Nov 22, 2019

You may be surprised to learn that fish and chips, though wildly popular in England for what seems like an eternity, actually was a specialty of the Portuguese Sephardic Jews who fled the Inquisition in the 16th century and found refuge in the British Isles. Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver referred to this recently in an article in The New York Times, adding that “Dishes evolve, impacted by trade, war, famine and a hundred other forces.” Among those “other forces” are dishes born of religious ritual. For observant Jews, fish is pareve, a neutral...

    Marcus M. Gilban|Nov 22, 2019

RIO DE JANEIRO (JTA)—Several Brazilian Jewish groups are condemning a magazine news article that likened a local Jewish senior politician to Nazi Germany’s propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels. Istoe magazine published on Friday an article titled “Goebbels of the Planalto”—a reference to Brazil’s presidential palace—that highlights the fact that Brazil’s Secretary of Communications Fabio Wajngarten is Jewish and suggests a Jewish conspiracy to back recent advertising budget cuts to media outlets that are not allied with the government. Est...
