    Cnaan Liphshiz|Nov 27, 2020

(JTA) - National Independence Day in Poland has served in recent years as a backdrop for anti-Semitic, xenophobic and violent incidents at nationalist rallies. Last week, thousands in Warsaw flouted the coronavirus ban on public gatherings and clashed with police who tried to disperse them. The illegal procession on Independence Day, Nov. 11, included a banner that read "no to Jewish demands" - a reference to the efforts pushing Poland to pass legislation offering restitution for property that o...

    Gabe Friedman|Nov 27, 2020

(JTA) - When Mikael Dolsten, the head scientist at Pfizer, heard the news last week that the COVID-19 vaccine that he has been helping to develop for the better part of a year was over 90 percent effective, he and his colleagues literally leapt with joy at a corporate office in Connecticut. "This may turn out to be one of the biggest medical advances of the past 100 years," Dolsten said by Zoom from his home office last week, the emotion clear in his voice and on his face. He was pointing to...

  • Facing a federal complaint, the University of Illinois pledges to protect Jewish and pro-Israel students

    Nov 27, 2020

By Ben Sales (JTA) — Weeks after a federal complaint alleged an anti-Semitic climate at the University of Illinois, the university announced it would work with Jewish groups to improve conditions for Jews and pro-Israel students on campus. The campus in Champaign-Urbana, home to 34,000 undergraduates and some 3,000 Jewish undergraduate students, was recently the subject of a legal complaint asking the U.S. Education Department to investigate a “hostile environment of anti-Semitism.” The complaint cited multiple instances of swastika graff...

Study: Israel second least affordable country (JNS) — Israeli housing is the second most expensive in the world, a new study finds. According to the study, conducted by Australia’s price-comparison website CompareTheMarket, the average Israeli household spends the equivalent of 26.6 percent of its annual disposable income on each square meter (10.8 square feet) of housing space. The only country with less affordable housing is South Korea, the study notes, with each square meter (10.8 square feet) of housing space costing the equivalent of 39....

    Gabriel Greschler|Nov 27, 2020

    (J. the Jewish News of Northern California via JTA) — The student government at San Francisco State University has approved a divestment resolution targeting Israel that would have the school pull out of investments in companies that do business in Israeli settlements. Following a lengthy and contentious public comment period, Associated Students passed the measure in a 17-1 vote with two abstentions. Nearly two dozen speakers had offered testimonies on both sides of the resolution. The passage of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions r...

  • Their annual gathering impossible, Chabad rabbis convene on Zoom - for days and days

    Shira Hanau|Nov 27, 2020

(JTA) — At the end of the annual conference of Chabad emissaries from around the world, they typically take a giant group photograph in front of the movement’s headquarters in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights. But this year, no camera at the Kinus Hashluchim could capture the nearly 6,000 participants at once: They were on Zoom from their separate computers and time zones. The video version was a concession to the coronavirus pandemic that has disrupted the globe for nearly a year. What’s more, the conference didn’t really end. Without planes to catch...

  • New York's Nicole Malliotakis seeks to be a conservative counterweight to 'The Squad'

    Jackson Richman|Nov 27, 2020

(JNS) — Despite retaining control of the U.S. House of Representatives, the Democrats saw a number of significant defeats in the Nov. 3 elections that will shrink their majority going into the 117th Congress. One of the biggest upsets was by Republican Nicole Malliotakis, who defeated incumbent—although newly elected himself two years ago—Democratic Rep. Max Rose in New York’s 11th Congressional District. Rose, 33, who was first elected to Congress in 2018, conceded to the New York State Assembly member on Nov. 12. Out of 717,708 people...
