Central Florida's Independent Jewish Voice
Menemsha Films launched the U.S. theatrical release of the feel-good comedy "Dough," in South Florida Feb. 12. Now in its 10th week, the film continues to play to sold out crowds and Menemsha Films is rolling out "Dough" to markets nationwide on April 29 including Orlando, Tampa and Gainesville.
Jonathan Pryce ("Pirates of the Caribbean," "Game of Thrones") stars as curmudgeonly widower, Nat Dayan, who obstinately clings to his way of life and his livelihood as a Kosher bakery shop owner in London's East End. With a dwindling clientele and the pressures of encroaching big box stores, Nat reluctantly enlists the help of teenager Ayyash who has a secret side gig selling marijuana to help his struggling immigrant mother make ends meet. When Ayyash accidentally drops his stash into the mixing dough, the challah starts flying off the shelves and an unlikely friendship forms between the old Jewish baker and his young Muslim apprentice. "Dough" is a warmhearted and gently humorous story about
overcoming prejudice and finding redemption in unexpected places.
Says critic Dan Hudak of PunchDrinkMovies.com and Florida Weekly "[in "Dough"] the social messages hit home, and they are plentiful: A Muslim and a Jew working peacefully together, small businesses holding their own against corporate giants, the need for companionship after losing the love of your life, an immigrant's struggle to make ends meet in an unforgiving society, the recklessness of youth and how it impacts those around them, etc. None are touched upon with great depth or insight, but all are handled with fearless warmth."
Directed by John Goldschmidt, "Dough" also stars Pauline Collins ("Quartet," "Shirley Valentine") and Jerome Holder ("The Sparticle Mystery," "The Sweeter Side of Life").
