Maureen Barkan Fine, age 89, of Casselberry, passed away on Friday, June 16, 2017, at Florida Hospital—Altamonte. She was born on Sept. 10, 1927, in Brooklyn, New York, to the late Harry and Betty Leah Stein Barkan. A child actress for ABC radio show “Let’s Pretend,” she was the widow of the late Bernard M. Fine. Maureen was also a light opera singer, teacher, doctor’s assistant, manager of retail stores, owner of a retail/wholesale business and counselor for HRS. She was an organizer and always tried to help others with their problems. Maureen helped organize “The Pied Pipers,” and worked with The District of Columbia Board of Education and the Youth Council of Washington DC. She organized women’s clubs, garden clubs and produced, organized and directed fashion shows and special events. Later, Maureen worked at the Sear’s Maintenance Agreement Department. She also earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Central Florida.
During WWII, Maureen was a member of AWVS and the Red Cross and organized a team to make tourniquets and roll bandages. She also sold war stamps and bonds at different events and locations.
She belonged to American Red Cross Disaster Action Team, Air Force Sergeant’s Association and Eastern Star. She was chairman of the “Royal Arms Leisure Club” and past president of the Women’s Club. She was also a former member of Congregation Ohev Shalom, COS Sisterhood and COS Seniors.
Maureen is survived by her sons, Marc Fine and Harry Fine of Casselberry; daughter, Eve (Stewart) Stone of Lake Mary; and her grandson, Michael Stone. A graveside funeral service was held at Ohev Shalom Cemetery, with Rabbi Arnold Siegel officiating.
