Teachers Zoomed in to annual Teachers' Institute

Last week, President Trump signed into law the “Never Again Education Act,” which expands the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s education programming to teachers nationwide and requires the museum to develop and disseminate resources to improve awareness of the Holocaust.

The first week in June, the Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center in Orlando held on Zoom the first ever online Dr. Norman M. Wall Teacher’s Institute on Holocaust Education 2020 (previously titled the Summer Teachers’ Institute). Some 40 teachers took part, learning about the Holocaust and applying its lessons to confront hate and prejudice

In view of the background of racial turmoil and protests in the United States, the program is both timely and important.

For more than 20 years, the Holocaust Center has been training teachers every June at the Teachers’ Institute. Teachers at every grade level, and in every discipline, are invited to participate in this multi-day institute designed to assist them in incorporating Holocaust Education in their class.

In addition to the institute, the Holocaust Center founder, Tess Wise, developed Teaching Trunks that give educators access to teaching resources needed to teach a comprehensive Holocaust unit and implement Holocaust education into their lessons.
