COS to change leadership

After 17 years of service to Congregation Ohev Shalom, Rabbi David Kay’s leadership will be completed at the end of his contract, July 3, 2021. The COS Board of Trustees determined that it would be in the best interest of the congregation to change the rabbinic leadership.

“Congregation Ohev Shalom is very fortunate and so pleased that Rabbi Kay will remain fully engaged as our rabbi through the end of July 2021. Rabbi Kay has been an extremely dedicated and valued member of our clergy for over 16 years,” said Rachel Gebaide, president of the Board of Trustees.

In a short letter to the congregation members, Rabbi Kay wrote: “I have been privileged to be a part of the legacy of this remarkable institution; to share with you in all your sorrows and joys, tragedies and triumphs; to see our son grow up here, to celebrate my family’s lifecycle events with you.”

Rabbi Kay came to COS in 2004, when the building was still on Goddard Street in Orlando. He served under Rabbi Aaron Rubinger as assistant rabbi, filling the position of rabbi after Rubinger retired.

“In all the years we’ve been together, I’ve emphasized how our tradition teaches that every moment presents new opportunities. There are still many interests I’m eager to pursue, while time and vitality allow,” Kay said.

Many congregants have questions. “What happens now?”

Ohev Shalom is forming the search committee to lead the congregation through the recruitment and engagement process for COS’s next rabbi.

“This is an awesome task, and our entire congregation will have opportunities to participate in the process,” Gebaide said.

Gebaide also said that plans are being made to honor Rabbi Kay in the spring. “Hopefully in-person, but virtually if necessary,” she said.
