Central Florida's Independent Jewish Voice
For many of the clients who come to Jewish Family Services, the holidays can often be a stressful and dark time. This year is especially difficult as so many in our Central Florida community have lost their jobs, are struggling to pay bills, or have even lost a loved one to the coronavirus.
But amidst the darkness, here at JFS Orlando we've seen a bright light appear this holiday season. Some members in our community have decided, instead of spending money on gifts for their family and friends, to donate in honor of their loved ones to JFS.
One such couple is Fred and Frances Brown. "We are very concerned about the issue of food insecurity that is going on in so many peoples' lives," they explained. "For that reason, rather than spend money on gifts, we have decided to donate money to help people in our community ... in our children and grandchildren's honor." Fred's father, Sidney Brown, was one of the founding members of JFS. "He firmly believed in the mission and goal of what Central Florida needed with the establishment of the agency," said Fred. "I feel that he would be very pleased with how JFS is today."
Tribute donations are always beautiful ways to commemorate someone while supporting those in need in the community. But to sacrifice something we might want to give to those who truly need is inspiring and a perfect example of tzedakah.
JFS Orlando thanks Fred and Frances and all who have donated in tribute this holiday season. "Your donation is already making an impact on our neighbors who continue to face challenges during the pandemic."
To make your own tribute donation in honor or in memory of a loved one, simply visit http://www.jfsorlando.org/tribute-cards. JFS Orlando will send a special tribute card to your designated recipient, noting a donation has been made on behalf of the honoree.
