Communitywide event to help Ukraine

Congregation Ohev Shalom Men's Club and Sisterhood are hosting a community-wide event to support humanitarian efforts for the people of Ukraine. The program will be held on Sunday, May 22, 2022 at COS.

In addition to raising funds for Ukrainians, this event will be a lot of fun. COS Men's Club member Mark Stone will entertain the audience with his unbelievable mind reading and ESP show, "Mentalmania," sprinkled with lots of comedy. Stone, who is a professional mentalist, will not accept a fee for his show and requested that 100 percent of the proceeds received will go to the Ukrainians.

Stone's decision to step forward with his suggestion to do the event is based on the idea that many people have already helped the people of Ukraine, but a lot more help is needed.

Stone, along with his wife, Susie, have been members of COS since 1984. He shared his feelings about his concerns for the Ukrainians: "What is needed besides weapons? The Ukrainian people need food. They need clean water. They need medicine, medical supplies, mental health assistance, and primary and emergency medical help. They need shelter and because of freezing weather they need blankets to keep warm. They need clothing. They need basic hygiene supplies - soap, toothpaste, diapers, toilet paper, etc. They need supplies to help stop the spread of disease. They need things to keep the children occupied, things such as coloring books and crayons.  Imagine if you, your children, and some of your elderly relatives had to take shelter in a crowded movie theater, or a school, or a subway station only to be subjected to incessant bombing. And imagine if you had to be subjected to the rampant killings, rape, and other atrocities that the Russian soldiers are committing."

The doors open at 1:15 p.m. and light refreshments will be served. The show will start at 2 p.m., beginning with comments from Rabbi Murray Ezring, and a short video. Admission is $36 per person. Registration is required at http://www.ohevshalom.org. Opportunities for additional donations and sponsorships will also be available online and at the event.

Congregation Ohev Shalom is located at 613 Concourse Parkway South, Maitland.
