June 22 — Venerated-Persecuted-Forgotten: Victims of Nazism at FC Bayern Munich

An opening wine and cheese reception will be held on June 22, 6:30 p.m., for the Holocaust Center’s newest exhibit, Venerated-Persecuted-Forgotten: Victims of Nazism at FC Bayern Munich. The reception includes a short program featuring one of the exhibit curators from Germany to discuss an overview of the club’s history. There will be a Q&A.

The exhibit, which runs through Sept. 10, features the stories of nine Jewish pioneer players from the FC Bayern Munich soccer club during the development of modern soccer in Germany — how the club won the national championship for the first time in 1932, and the religious and political persecution under the Nazis that led to the halt on its success story.

Aug. 24 — Film Screening, “Liga Terezin,” 6:30 p.m.

“Liga Terezin” is a documentary inspired by Oded Breda’s quest to document the story of a soccer league in the Ghetto Theresienstadt after he recognized his uncle in a Nazi propaganda film about the team. This discovery started him on a journey to understand the role that sports can play in helping to combat discrimination and antisemitism today. A panel led by Breda and Joanie Holzer Schirm, a Central Florida author and archivist of the Holden Collection, will follow the screening.
