Israel will prevail

Dear Editor:

As an associate professor of Judaic Studies, I cannot speak officially on behalf of my university, but as a private citizen I can express my deepest solidarity with the State of Israel (where I resided for several years) during this perilous time of unprovoked atrocities against its civilian population. Mere words seem insignificant in the face of such brutality, enacted by the terrorist organization called Hamas. However, there is little doubt that every thought, every sentiment, every prayer offered on behalf of the people of Israel in this hour lends vital encouragement, and the knowledge that the Jewish nation does not stand alone. Moreover, Israel will certainly overcome the barbaric evil of Hamas that has in recent days been perpetrated against its citizenry. Israel must and will prevail in this civilizational struggle, and I am thankful that her people have the firm and unwavering support the United States. The hope of tikkun olam (“the repair of the world”) will always remain, bolstered by the firm determination to replace the seeds of hate and antisemitism with seeds of peace. We must all long for the day when “nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore” (Isaiah 2:4).
